Frequently Asked Questions

Registration

I want to register an account on MyAdventure but an invitation code is required. How do I get one?

Subscribe here and you’ll soon receive one.

Why do I need a Flickr account?

See “Why do I have to use Flickr for photo storage?”.

Usage

How do I start a new trip?

Open MyAdventure mobile app. Enter a trip name (you can change it later), enter or select a motorcycle, select type of logger (built-in for using the smartphone GPS and standalone for using our custom logger) and click Start.

I forgot to create a new trip and I am already on the road. What do I do?

If you are using the hardware logger do not worry. It is already recording everything for you so you can create a new trip now or later. However if you use the smartphone logger you need to create the trip ASAP because it is not being recorded.

I was on a trip and I got back home. I did not create a new trip in MyAdventure. Can I still upload my trip’s data?

If you used the hardware logger - yes. Just make sure you create a new trip from the website and set its start date to the one you actually started the trip. If you did not use a hardware logger you cannot do anything about it as your smartphone did not record the trip data.

It’s been several days with no Internet connectivity. How do I proceed with uploading?

Just follow the usual procedure. The system is OK with any period of uploading data to it. It is really up to you if you’ll do it a few times a day or once in a couple of weeks.

Which one do I upload first - logger data or photos?

It does not matter. The system is pretty smart and will arrange things for you. Just make sure you send your logger data and your photos and leave the rest to it.

Photos

Do I need a camera with GPS?

No. Our system does not require special cameras and GPS data built-in the photos to position them appropriately on the map.

Do I need to setup my camera clock?

Yes, photo positioning logic is time-based so you need your camera clock to be synced. However do not worry if you forget to do this and use a camera with its clock completely off. We’ve taken care of this and you have a way to just tell our system what is the time of your camera for the given trip and it will make the necessary adjustments.

What happens if I use my mobile phone’s camera?

This is probably the most widely adopted way to make photos nowadays. However keep in mind that your phone changes its timezone automatically while you travel and cross timezone boundaries. You need to disable “Automatic Timezone” in your phone clock settings or else your photos are not going to sync correctly on the map.

How do I upload photos?

You need to register in Flickr and download their mobile app. Then just share all of your trip photos using Flickr so they get uploaded in your Flickr account. There is really nothing more you need to do like creating albums, changing settings, etc. - just bulk upload them to Flickr and MyAdventure will take care of associating them with your locations and events automatically for you.

Why do I have to use Flickr for photo storage?

Because Flickr provides 1TB for free for you. They also give one of the best services for storing photos because they keep the original photo quality. This is especially important for the photography geeks among us.

Maps

Which map provider do you use?

Currently we use Google Maps.

Why do trip route lines look rough at some places?

Because we optimize the route to be able to show large amounts of data quickly. We do store a very detailed version of the route - just as it came from your logger device - and going forward we constantly enhance our visualization algorithms to provide smoother and more precise views of the locations.

Troubleshooting

The device does not power on.

Make sure you’ve followed the BikeLogger mounting instructions. Make sure you’ve turned the ignition key to ON. If you cannot find a resolution bring the bike to a motorcycle service and have a qualified technician check the logger wiring.

The device is powered on but I cannot connect it to my phone / tablet.

Allow for at least 30–60 seconds to pass after starting the logger before attempting to connect to it with your mobile device. Open the Bluetooth device list on your phone / tablet and perform a scan. Make sure you see a device with name starting with ‘bikelogger’. Pair with the device. Start MyAdventure mobile app and try again.

I have recorded my trip and the route shows fine but my photos are at the wrong locations.

Login to your Dashboard on our website and navigate to your trip’s settings page. Make sure the configured camera clock time matches the actual clock time of your camera / phone.

I have a problem which is not addressed by this FAQ. What do I do?

Please drop us a note and we’ll help you resolve it.

General

Is it necessary to attach the logger device to various sensors on the bike?

No. The logger has its own sensors and is completely autonomous aside from getting electric power from the bike’s battery.

Does it work for vehicles different than motorcycles?

Yes. We have tried it with cars, yachts, airplanes and bicycles but we are focused on motorcycles. Drop us a note if you have something in mind.

How much memory does the logger device have?

The logger has enough memory to keep data for more than 2 years of non-stop travel without sending any data.

How do I send the recorded data to MyAdventure’s website?

You send the data using your smartphone. Switch your bike’s ignition key to ON, start MyAdventure mobile app on your phone and click ‘Get Data From Bike’. Once the operation completes make sure you are connected to the Internet (mobile network or WiFi) and click ‘Upload’. Switch the ignition key to OFF. This is it.

How do I add details about places I stop at?

Start your mobile app and click ‘Check In’ adding a comment and selecting the type of place or event.

How much time do you keep recorded adventures?

Right now we keep them forever. Our policy for future recorded adventures might change but we will notify all our users accordingly.

Can I share my adventure on social networks like Facebook?

Yes. Every recorded adventure has a unique URL which you can post everywhere. Just open your trip from the mobile app or from your Dashboard once you login on our website and copy/paste its URL. You can also use the share buttons on the trip view web page and inside the mobile app.

How precise is the logger device GPS?

We use a high quality 10Hz GPS with support for DGPS/WAAS/EGNOS which provide enhanced location precision. We also use an active antenna which provides a substantial signal gain. There is no concrete answer to this question as it strongly depends on relief, surroundings, weather, location on Earth and other factors but the precision is within the user space GPS standard and frequently around 10–20 meters.

Do I need constant Internet connectivity?

No. We are using your mobile phone’s Internet connectivity so you do not need to pay for mobile data plans, SIM cards, etc. Whenever your phone connects to the Internet you can transfer data from your bike to MyAdventure. In the meantime the system records your adventure without any interruption no matter if you are online or offline.

Do I need to buy a SIM card for the logger device?

No. The system uses your phone’s Internet access to transfer data.

Can I try the system before buying a logger device?

Yes. Please subscribe here and you’ll shortly receive an invitation code to register.

Can I rent a logger device?

Yes. Please drop us a note to discuss it.

How do I mount the logger device?

The logger device is mounted using 3M dual lock adhesive which is easy to use, flexible and very strong. The usual location is beneath the pillion seat. You need to take a bit more care where you mount the active antenna - it’s nothing complex, just make sure your read the instructions.

What are the power requirements?

The logger needs to connect to the bike’s electric power system. It needs 12V DC. The negative lead connects directly to the battery’s negative terminal and the positive lead connects via a fused wire to a switched positive wire. The purpose is to have the logger powered only when the ignition key is set to the ON position. NOTE: Do not directly connect the positive wire to the positive battery terminal because your battery is going to get drained.

Do I need to put the GPS antenna at some special place?

The GPS antenna is active and thus pretty powerful. This really widens the options of where you may position it - sometimes we even mount it below the pillion seat next to the logger. Please read the mounting instructions for specific details.

Can I put the device inside a metal box / pannier?

No. Wireless communication (GPS and Bluetooth) will not be possible if you do this.

How do I check if the logger is started and ready for use?

Look for a blinking green light. It will show up seconds after the device gets powered on. Once you see the device is operational and ready for use.

Is the logger Bluetooth connection always active?

Yes.
